“I see you’re in your birthday suit again,” Max’s low-toned voice washed over her skin like tide coming in at the beach. Warm, salty and also a little scary.

Lynda turned her head and caught his stare. He stood in the doorway with a pensive expression pasted on his face. Meanwhile, she tried to decide whether she was angry or not.

She jumped off the mattress, slipped into her robe and began pacing the floor at the end of her bed. “You aren’t who I thought you were.”

“Likely not, but I’d like to believe that you feel I’m the better choice given what would have happened if I hadn’t shown up to fix your sink.”

Lynda stopped, turned to check Max’s shirtless body, swooned a little on the inside and resumed her pacing. Having seen “Carlos the Latin Lover” up close, she had to admit, Max the handyman, and his perfect tool, would still have been her choice between the two.

“The thing is I wasn’t exactly expecting a choice.”

“What do you do for a living?” he asked abruptly.

She stilled her feet and sat on the corner of her bed. “I’m a bookkeeper. Why?”

“You seem smart, but I wonder at the wisdom of anyone hiring a stranger to come to their house for sexual purposes.”

“Don’t even try to be angry with me. You don’t have the right.”

His eyes widened in obvious surprise. “Don’t I?” He lifted his casual pose from the doorframe and strolled toward the bed.

“It shouldn’t be against the law to have sex on your birthday.”

“It isn’t against the law to have sex on your birthday. It’s against the law to solicit someone to come to your house to fuck you and then pay them for it.”

“That shouldn’t be against the law, either.”

“And yet it is.”

“You aren’t the man that I—”

“Don’t.” He cut her off before she could finish her sentence with “hired” and then he pushed out a long sigh and rubbed his eyes with one hand.

Lynda watched him carefully. The only question in her mind was why Max was here at all. So she asked, “What are you doing here, anyway?”

“I’m supposed to be helping my cousin’s wife’s friend with a leaking sink. I must have had the address written down wrong. I hope to God her ‘real’ friend hasn’t drowned by now.”

“You were really here to fix my sink?”

“Yes. But you made me a better offer. I didn’t know at the time you intended to reimburse me for it.”

“I didn’t plan to do that. I already paid—”

“Stop!” he interrupted. “Be very careful of what you admit to me. I’m a prosecutor by day. The man that just left was an undercover detective who was about to renegotiate the fee.”

Her brows furrowed. “That’s not right. I already gave them cash—”

“Do you really want me to haul you in for solicitation of prostitution tonight?”

“No.”

“Choose your words carefully, then.” He leaned a hip against the end of her bed, hovering directly over her seated position and drilled a particularly deep penetrating gaze into her eyes.
