âI see youâre in your birthday suit again,â Maxâs low-toned voice washed over her skin like tide coming in at the beach. Warm, salty and also a little scary.
Lynda turned her head and caught his stare. He stood in the doorway with a pensive expression pasted on his face. Meanwhile, she tried to decide whether she was angry or not.
She jumped off the mattress, slipped into her robe and began pacing the floor at the end of her bed. âYou arenât who I thought you were.â
âLikely not, but Iâd like to believe that you feel Iâm the better choice given what would have happened if I hadnât shown up to fix your sink.â
Lynda stopped, turned to check Maxâs shirtless body, swooned a little on the inside and resumed her pacing. Having seen âCarlos the Latin Loverâ up close, she had to admit, Max the handyman, and his perfect tool, would still have been her choice between the two.
âThe thing is I wasnât exactly expecting a choice.â
âWhat do you do for a living?â he asked abruptly.
She stilled her feet and sat on the corner of her bed. âIâm a bookkeeper. Why?â
âYou seem smart, but I wonder at the wisdom of anyone hiring a stranger to come to their house for sexual purposes.â
âDonât even try to be angry with me. You donât have the right.â
His eyes widened in obvious surprise. âDonât I?â He lifted his casual pose from the doorframe and strolled toward the bed.
âIt shouldnât be against the law to have sex on your birthday.â
âIt isnât against the law to have sex on your birthday. Itâs against the law to solicit someone to come to your house to fuck you and then pay them for it.â
âThat shouldnât be against the law, either.â
âAnd yet it is.â
âYou arenât the man that Iââ
âDonât.â He cut her off before she could finish her sentence with âhiredâ and then he pushed out a long sigh and rubbed his eyes with one hand.
Lynda watched him carefully. The only question in her mind was why Max was here at all. So she asked, âWhat are you doing here, anyway?â
âIâm supposed to be helping my cousinâs wifeâs friend with a leaking sink. I must have had the address written down wrong. I hope to God her ârealâ friend hasnât drowned by now.â
âYou were really here to fix my sink?â
âYes. But you made me a better offer. I didnât know at the time you intended to reimburse me for it.â
âI didnât plan to do that. I already paidââ
âStop!â he interrupted. âBe very careful of what you admit to me. Iâm a prosecutor by day. The man that just left was an undercover detective who was about to renegotiate the fee.â
Her brows furrowed. âThatâs not right. I already gave them cashââ
âDo you really want me to haul you in for solicitation of prostitution tonight?â
âNo.â
âChoose your words carefully, then.â He leaned a hip against the end of her bed, hovering directly over her seated position and drilled a particularly deep penetrating gaze into her eyes.
